Questioner: they (Tories) approach it from a very individual sense, and he welcomes Lab approaching it from a collectivised point of view. #nfhealth

20.30

Questioner: there is a fundamental difference in how the Tories approach social care and the NHS. #nfhealth

20.29

Liz: we have to be aware of where the Tories are taking us. #nfhealth

20.29

Liz: we do believe in an NHS that is free of fear. And we want to see social care free of fear too. #nfhealth

20.28

He says that the way to sell insurance is to sell fear. Labour should stand for life and inclusion, not fear. #nfhealth

20.26

Questioner advising us all to read Deadly Spin by Wendell Potter. He has pointed out that the NHS bill is driven by the private healthcare lobby. #nfhealth

20.21

Questioner: there is too much emphasis on ‘sport’/competitiveness in school, rather than the idea of fitness per se. #nfhealth

20.19

..perhaps should we push a similar attainment in the realm of child health and fitness?

20.18

Questioner making the point the 5 GCSE goal made a great difference to academic achievement…

20.17

Liz: we need to do more on obesity. Cutting school sports partnership and school swimming is terrible. #nfhealth

20.11

(To clarify 20:05 update, reference was to people looking after their own relatives, in their own home at their own cost.)

20.08

20.04

20.02

He makes the point that Lab should look after pensioner issues, not least since they are a large voting block. #nfhealth

20.01

19.58

Liz: democratic accountability and conflicts of interest are 2 areas wherechanges willneed to be made. #nfhealth

19.52

Liz: admits we need to revisit the tariff/payments system & having the right incentives #nfhealth

19.50

Another Q. Nationally Lab needs to revisit what happened when they were in power too. #nfhealth

19.46

Liz now answering the last two questioners. #nfhealth

19.46

He likens the bill to a cancer. And claims the public have not fully realised- partlbecause Labour hasn’t talked enough about it. #nfhealth

19.45

He was born when the #nhs was free at the point of use, and he would like to die whilst it still is..#nfhealth

Q: Ashfield health campaigner is outlining the raft of cuts in his constituency. #nfhealth

19.42

What can you promise and what can you deliver? What can we credibly promise? (Labour) #nfhealth

19.41

Next Q. How do we challenge this bill. And how do we repair & move towards the sort of preventative system you talk of? #nfhealth

19.40

Liz: we must campaign. People in the #nhs themselves must also speak out. Labour will support them. #nfhealth

19.38

Liz: 80% of ppl’s contact with medical services is with primary care, yet the bill does nothing to improve this. In fact the opposite. #nfhealth

19.37

19.19

19.18

Liz: instead of this, the coalition has focused on an enormous reorganisation of the #nhs #nfhealth

19.17

Liz: Prevention and early intervention is crucial. #nfhealth

19.17

Liz: We need a proper settlement on funding social care. #nfhealth

19.13

“How should the coalition respond to the Coalition’s changes to Health and Social Care?”
Liz Kendall MP, Shadow Minister for Care and Older People and Labour MP for Leicester West

Labour fought hard to get the Conservative-led Government to drop its risky plans for our NHS, but they rammed them through despite overwhelming opposition from the public and medical professions. Patients are already paying the price with thousands of nursing posts being cut and waiting times on the rise. How should Labour respond now?

An equally big challenge lies in the social care crisis. £1 billion has been cut from local council budgets for older people’s social care since the Government came to power. Fewer older people are getting the help they need and families face soaring care charges, which vary hugely across the country.

How should Labour reform services and support to ensure a fair and sustainable funding system that delivers dignity, independence and peace of mind for older and disabled people and their families?

Chairing tonight’s discussion is Nottinghamshire Fabian Executive member, Dr Amrit Caleyachetty.
